CBI arrests Commissioner of Income Tax in Mumbai AIT News Network MUMBAI. CBI has arrested OG Ganvir who retired as Commissioner of Income Tax in July 2009. The Agency conducted searches at seven places . The Officer was allegedly involved in a modus operandi of raising fund for his NGO by misusing his official powers while serving as Income Tax Commissioner between 2001 and 2009. Raids were also conducted at native place of ex- Officer at Bhandara, Ahmedabad and two places in Mumbai and at the residences of the trustees at Ganvir allegedly started NGO with his family members and relatives as trustees of NGO. Those who had some work in income tax were asked to pay donation to NGO. Floating NGOs is a common modus operandi by IAS, IPS and IRS Officers and there is hardly any Officer who has not floated an NGO in his or in relations name. An IPS Officer is well-known for running full time NGO at the cost of the time and resources of the Government. It is high time that the Government makes a list of all the Officers who have floated an NGO and stop paying them salaries as the Officers are making enough money from NGOs who are not even paying any tax to the Government claiming themselves to be charitable institution. CBI should also start a verification check on Promoters of all NGOs to nail corrupt officers as majority of NGOs have corrupt Bureaucrats as their Patrons. There are many companies who are not in a position to pay cash bribes to Officers. In such cases the Companies are asked to pay donation by Cheque in name of NGO. Some Officers also ask the Companies to pay cheque as Consultancy charges in name of their sons and daughters as happened in the case of a senior Customs Officer who used to pass favourable orders in adjudication after taking cheques.
