Justice RMS Khandeparkar-ex-Judge of Bombay High Court has been appointed as President of CESTAT (Customs Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal).
Justice Khandeparkar was born on 15-08-1946. He got himself enrolled as an Advocate on 30th July 1973.
He was a Member of the Goa High Court Bar Association since its inception and subsequently became General Secretary of the Managing Committee of the said Association.
He was also a Member of All Goa Advocate Association and of the North Goa Advocate Association. He has been Central Government Standing Counsel in Goa since December 1990 and Special Public Prosecutor for Central Excise, Customs, FERA etc., in Goa since 1984. He was elevated as Judge of the Bombay High Court on 12th April 1996.He retired from Bombay High Court on 15th August, 2008.
The Post of President of CESTAT was lying vacant for quite some time and the filing of a Petition in Supreme Court by CESTAT Bar Association has expedited the appointment of the President. Justice SN Jha who was earlier President of CESTAT resigned after he was appointed as President of Bihar State Human Rights Commission.
Justice Khandeparkar who is an Authority on Indirect Tax matters is expected to tone up the working and credibility of CESTAT which is already facing flak from several quarters. A series of articles have been published by Excise Law Times recently highlighting several issues related to the working of CESTAT. Though ex-President of CESTAT Justice SN Jha tried his best to take action on the Editorials published by Numero Uno of Excise & Customs Law Print Media but his actions were sabotaged by vested interests according to sources.
AIT welcomes the appointment of Justice Khandeparker and wishes him a good luck in his new innings.
